YOSHIHIDE SUGA (JAPANESE CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY) TO REPLACE SHINZO ABE AS JAPAN’S NEW PRIME MINISTER.

Yoshihide Suga (Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary and a longtime aide under outgoing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe) won a landslide victory on Monday to become the head of Japanese ruling party Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). He will also become the country’s next prime minister on Wednesday, 16 September 2020. Yoshihide Suga pledged to carry on many programmes of ex-prime minister Shinzo Abe including his signature “Abenomics” economic strategy. The Japanese outgoing prime minister Shinzo Abe recently stepped down from his post due to his chronic illness. Japanese new prime minister Yoshihide Suga faces several challenges including reviving the economy, tackling coronavirus pandemic and dealing with Japan’s rapidly aging society in which almost one third of the population is older than 60.
