Our (Viewers corner) correspondent in New York (U.S.A) learnt recently that an African-American man, Ricky Jackson who was sentenced to death in 1975 after someone testified against him and his colleague for killing a businessman was recently freed. We gathered also that one of those that testified against these two convicted individuals withdrew their statement and later said that the police pressured them to give evidence that Ricky Jackson was responsible for the man’s death which made the court sentenced him to death but God Almighty who is the creator of heaven and earth saved the life of Ricky Jackson (now 59 years). After series of court trials, it was truly proven that Ricky Jackson was wrongfully accused and was awarded the sum of 2 million dollars as compensation. This man spent about 40 years in the prison waiting for the day he would be executed just like that for an offence he did not commit, now 40 years of his life wasted in the prison for nothing.
Our concern is this, assuming this man was killed before the truth came out, he would have just gone like that which is very wrong. Again no amount of money would bring back the long years he wasted in the prison, what about the trauma he may have gone through all these years knowing that someday he would be executed. We (Viewers corner) thank and praise God Almighty that the truth came out at last, who knows how many innocent lives that may have been lost through this process. This is why we would continue to plead with various governments worldwide that are engaging in this method of killing convicted individuals to please have a rethink, it would be better to send them to life jail rather than execution because no one has right to take another persons life no matter the situation. It is only God Almighty who is our father in heaven has the power to do so, whether we agree or not, this is the truth.
