It was reported than Philip Walton (an American hostage) kidnapped in Niger last week has been freed by the US special forces in a raid. According to the report, Philip Walton was kidnapped on Monday, 26 October in Massalata village close to the border with Nigeria where he had been living with his wife and child for two years. He was rescued by the US special forces on Saturday, 31 October 2020. Jonathan Hoffman, (assistant to the Secretary of State for Public Affairs) announced Mr Philip Walton’s freedom, stating that he is now in the care of the US Department of State. Jihadist and armed groups have been terrorising Nigeria, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso for years and about six western hostages are being held including Jeffrey Woodke (American aid worker) who was kidnapped four years ago in central Niger.
