It was reported that President Donald Trump’s administration is planning to impose new sanctions on Chinese officials over their allege role in China’s disqualification of elected opposition legislators in Hong Kong. According to the report, the sanctions which would likely be asset freezes and financial sanctions would target about 14 officials, including those from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that he had imposed visa restrictions on Chinese officials who have used or threatened to use violence, the release of private information or other coercive tactics to intimidate critics. Also in August, United States imposed sanctions on Carrie Lam (Hong Kong Chief Executive), the Hong Kong’s current and former police chiefs and other top officials for their crackdown role on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement. China opposed and condemned U.S. sanctioning Chinese officials, saying that it will take necessary and legitimate steps to safeguard its sovereignty, security and development rights.
