Uganda Tiktoer jailed

Uganda’s War on Free Speech: TikToker Jailed 32 Months for Mocking President.

A 21-year-old Ugandan TikToker, Emmanuel Nabugodi, has just been sentenced to 32 months in prison for creating a video that mocked President Yoweri Museveni. The video was a mock trial where Nabugodi called for Museveni’s public flogging, which obviously didn’t sit well with the authorities. Nabugodi had gained a significant following on TikTok with around 20,000 followers and was known for his comedic content. However, this particular video landed him in hot water, with charges including hate speech and spreading malicious information. This isn’t an isolated incident; several Ugandans have faced harsh penalties for criticizing the government online. Just recently, another TikToker, Edward Awebwa, received a six-year prison sentence for posts related to Museveni. There are also three other individuals awaiting trial under similar circumstances. The laws responsible for these convictions, specifically the Computer Misuse Act enacted in 2022, have raised concerns among human rights organizations. They argue that these laws are being used to intimidate and suppress critics of President Museveni, who has been in power since 1986. The situation has sparked fears among citizens about the repercussions of online expressions, with many activists and content creators feeling a chilling effect on their freedom of speech. The international community is also calling for urgent reforms to protect the digital rights of Ugandans.
