Uganda has taken a significant stride towards energy self-sufficiency with the launch of the Karuma Hydropower Project, a 600-megawatt hydroelectric plant on the River Nile. This monumental project solidifies Uganda’s position as a leader in renewable energy.
$1.7 Billion Investment in Clean Energy:
The $1.7 billion facility, financed by China, will increase Uganda’s power generation capacity by nearly 50%. This clean energy boost will benefit millions of households and support economic growth.
Regional Power Hub:
Uganda’s expanded energy capacity will also enhance its role as a regional power supplier. Neighboring countries, including Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya, will benefit from increased electricity exports.
Uganda’s Hydropower Dominance:
Hydropower remains Uganda’s primary source of electricity, accounting for over 90% of its energy mix. The Karuma Hydropower Project reinforces the country’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.
