Viewers Corner News correspondent in Kampala learned that Uganda military has started withdrawing its troops from a regional force in Somalia. The report was made known to the public on Thursday, December 7, 2017 by Lt. Col. Deo Akiiki (deputy spokesman for the Ugandan military). Lt. Col. Deo Akiiki stated that about 281 troops will leave Somalia by December 31, 2017. This move marks the beginning of the end of African Union team that has been battling Islamic extremists in Somalia. In 2007, Uganda sent its troops to Somalia to help fight insurgency. The country (Uganda) was the first African country to take such move and it has over 6,000 troops in Somalia as part of the multi-national African Union force. By the end of 2020, about 22,000 African peacekeepers fighting insurgency in Somalia would be withdrawn under an agreement between the African Union and the United Nations Security Council and about 1,000 would be withdrawn before end of this year (2017). This would leave Somalia’s army to fight al-Shabab on their own.
