Men flogged in Aceh province for homosexuality

TWO MEN AGED 27 AND 29 WERE PUBLICLY CANED 77 TIMES EACH FOR HOMOSEXUALITY IN INDONESIA’S ACEH PROVINCE.

It was reported that two men aged 27 and 29 were recently flogged 77 times each at Banda Aceh’s Tamansari city park in Indonesia for homosexuality. The men who their neighbours caught having sex were arrested in November 2020 by the Islamic religious police. The Sharia court sentenced the men to 80 strokes of cane each in December and were flogged by a team of five enforcers 77 times each after a remission for time spent in prison. Many people witnessed the caning at Banda Aceh’s Tamansari city park (Indonesia) and this is the third time that Aceh, the only province in Indonesia that practise Shariah law has flogged people for homosexuality since the Islamic law was implemented in 2015. Four other people were flogged 17 strokes for extra-marital affairs and 40 strokes for drinking alcohol. In Sharia law, caning is a punishment for homosexuality, adultery, gambling, drinking alcohol, for women who wear tight clothes and men who skip Friday prayers.
