The 61 year old independent candidate and law professor, Kais Saied has won Tunisia presidential election with 72.71 percent of the votes. According to the country’s electoral commission, Kais Saied won the election with 2.7 million votes against one million gotten by Nabil Karoui (his opponent) in Sunday’s presidential runoff election. Nabil Karoui (a business tycoon) who was in prison for most of the campaign has conceded defeat. Kais Saied, supported by the conservative Ennahdha party promised during the campaign to fight corruption and support decentralisation. He (Kais Saied) is a conservative leader, strong supporter of the death penalty and opposes homosexuality, as well as equal inheritance for men and women.
