Viewers Corner News correspondent learned that new rules on pilot mental health have been adopted by the European Union. This is three years (March 24, 2015) after Andreas Lubitz locked the captain out of the cockpit and deliberately crashed Germanwings A320 into a French mountainside on a flight from Barcelona (Spain) to Duesseldorf (Germany), killing all 150 people on board. Lubitz was said to have suffered from a mental disorder with psychotic symptoms which led to suicidal thoughts but he did not disclose his illness to the airline (Germanwings).
According to the report, the new rules required airlines to carry out a psychological assessment of pilots before they hire them. Also random testing for alcohol for all European airlines and those foreign carriers which fly into the European Union will become mandatory, while flight and cabin crew will be tested more for psychoactive substances. The safety rules are recommended by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
