THIRTY TWO YEARS AFTER QUITTING FROM AFRICAN UNION, MOROCCO WANTS TO REJOIN THE UNION.

King Mohammed VI said recently that his country wants to rejoin the African Union. Thirty two years ago, Morocco left African Union in protest of the bloc (AU) decision to accept Western Sahara (a former Spanish colony) as a member. Viewers Corner News source in Rabat learnt that King Mohammed wrote a message to African Union leaders as they began a two-day meeting in Kigali (Rwandan capital) stating that his Kingdom, Morocco wants to work within the AU. He also urged the bloc to reconsider its position on the “phantom state” of Western Sahara. Morocco maintained that Western Sahara is part of its kingdom even though the Sahrawi people led by the Polisario Front (Algerian-backed independence movement) have long campaigned for their self-determination right. For Morocco to return to African Union, it would need to be validated by a vote.
