We (Viewers Corner News team) have written articles on this topic in the past and we are doing so again. The Nigerian government should adopt a close gutter system in the country (Nigeria), meaning that all the water passageways should be closed system. The open gutter system which Nigeria is using is not helping matters because the people of the country (Nigeria) are always throwing trashes into them, thereby blocking the water passageways. Let more educational campaign be carried out to teach the people of Nigeria at various level on how their wastes should be managed and disposed. Sometime ago, during a working tour in Rivers state (Nigeria), our (Viewers Corner News team) crew spotted a woman in Porthacourt city throwing a huge trash into a gutter and that may not be the first time she was doing that. Other people may also be doing the same thing which is very bad because in the long run, water passageways may completely be blocked. Another point is servicing the existing drainage. If you construct a gutter, it may get blocked as time goes on, therefore it should be checked at all times by making sure that no trash or unwanted things are in the gutter. This should be the job of environmental ministry which every state in Nigeria should have. Look at the recent flood in Lagos state (Nigeria) which took away properties worth millions of Naira, it should have been avoided if a good drainage system is in place. Recently, in Asaba (the capital city of Delta state, Nigeria), our (Viewers Corner News) crew spotted a private car in front of theirs and a woman in that car threw trashes in the middle of the road as the car was driving. The “I do not care” attitude of most people in Nigeria is not helping matters at all, hence we (Viewers Corner News team) are calling on various state government to look into this issue carefully and come up with a law that would criminalise those abusing the streets of Nigeria, perhaps it would help in controlling the recklessness of people dumping trashes on the road and gutters across the country (Nigeria). We (Viewers Corner News team) would also use this opportunity to plead with various state government across the country (Nigeria) to learn from the recent fire incident that happened in Onitsha (Anambra state, Nigeria) which destroyed huge businesses in that city. State government should have their own fire fighting team which would be at standby to respond to issues whenever such incident happens. If a strong fire fighting team was on ground, such Onitsha fire incident should not have caused huge damage. Again those officers inspecting the road worthiness of vehicles in Nigeria should not allow unhealthy vehicles to ply the roads for the safety of the people of Nigeria.
