After a violent and deadly demonstration at the Capitol by President Trump’s supporters, and the Congress rejected President Trump loyalists’ challenges to Joe Biden’s win in Pennsylvania, the Congress finally counted the electoral votes. Vice President Mike Pence declared Joe Biden the winner of the presidential election after the United States Congress finished counting the electoral votes during a joint session of the Congress on Thursday (7 January 2021). Senator Kamala Harris was also declared the vice president-elect of the United States by Mike Pence. President Trump who told his supporters at a rally that he would never concede defeat, later released a statement that there would be an orderly transition on 20 January 2021. President Trump’s supporters forced their way at the US Capitol through security barricades, broke windows, climbed on rafters, ripped down the United States flags in a bid to disrupt the joint session of the Congress and overturn Joe Biden’s win. Joe Biden (the United States president-elect) and Kamala Harris (vice president-elect) will be inaugurated on 20 January 2021.
