It was reported that the United States has withdrawn from arms control treaty with Russia on Friday, 2 August. United States claimed that the treaty undermines its national security interests. Many have criticized the move, saying that it could increase the mistrust between the two countries (United States and Russia) and also provoke a new arms race. On 1 February 2019, Mike Pompeo (US Secretary of State) said that US would no longer be restricted by the treaty while Russia violates it, that his country would suspend its participation in the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty unless Moscow destroys missiles which the US and its NATO allies alleged that they violate the agreement. Russia denied the allegations and accused United States of making mockery of the agreement. In 1987, the United States and Soviet Union under the leaderships of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev respectively signed the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty to eliminate the presence of land-based nuclear missiles and medium-range arsenals between 500km to 5,500km from Europe.
