The United States House of Representatives passes a bill ending regular trade relations with Russia and Belarus.

The United States House of Representatives voted 424-8 to cease normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus, the latest attempt to destroy Russia’s economy.

Andy Biggs, Dan Bishop, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Glenn Grothman, Thomas Massie, and Chip Roy were the eight Republicans who voted against the bill. The bill deprives Russia and Belarus of their permanent normal commercial relations status and gives President Joe Biden more authority by allowing him to levy taxes on their products. It also expands the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, allowing the Biden administration to impose additional sanctions on Russia and its allies. According to the bill’s text, President Biden may impose sanctions on foreign persons who are responsible for or complicit in, or have directly or indirectly engaged in, serious human rights abuses. The bill also calls for Russia’s participation in the World Trade Organization to be suspended by revoking its most favoured nation designation, which would allow for higher tariff rates on Russian exports. The bill is now being sent to the Senate, where Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has promised to expedite its passage.
