THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL VOTED TO EXTEND THE PEACEKEEPING FORCE IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC FOR A YEAR.

It was unanimously voted by the United Nations Security Council to extend the the U.N. peacekeeping force in Central African Republic until November 15, 2020. The peacekeepers were mandated to protect civilians, support peace efforts, and assist in preparing for elections starting in 2020. The French-drafted resolution advised all signatories of the February 6 peace agreement to implement the agreement without delay and also demanded that armed groups cease all violence. The resolution also condemned violations of international humanitarian law, human rights violations and abuses, including those committed against humanity. In the resolution, the Security Council warned that individuals or entities that undermine peace and stability in Central African Republic will face sanctions. Since 2013, Central African Republic has experienced deadly interreligious and intercommunal fighting between the Muslim Seleka rebels who seized power in the capital and the Christian anti-Balaka militias. The clashes have killed thousands of people and hundreds of thousands displaced.
