The United kingdom will leave the European Union at 2300 GMT on Friday, 31 January 2020, ending its 47-year membership with the bloc. This would be the Britain’s most significant change since the loss of its empire and the country’s major blow of its 70 years efforts to forge European unity from the ruins of world wars. Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay while England and Wales voted to leave the bloc. Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister has demanded a second independence referendum. In the building of the European Council in Brussels, a Union Jack will be lowered at 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Friday to remove the flags of non-EU countries.
