NASA and SpaceX

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) JPSS-4 satellite to sponsor Elon Musk’s SpaceX to launch a climate satellite.

Elon Musk’s company recently bagged a contract from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) to launch a climate satellite, the JPSS-4, into Earth’s orbit. This program is a cooperative effort of NOAA and NASA, which awarded the JPSS-4 launch contract on NOAA’s behalf to SpaceX. This JPSS-4 satellite is tasked with the objective to monitor and collect information about Earth’s land, sea, and air. According to NASA officials, the JPSS-4 satellite will predict changes in weather, climate, oceans, and coasts to support the nation’s economy and protect lives and property. The total contract provided Space X with a fund of over $112.7 million to cover all expenses. This can be a huge advancement in space exploration and climate change observation. SpaceX’s Starlink satellites have been of great help, and much greater things are expected of this mission. The JPSS (Joint Polar Satellite System) will be delivered to orbit by the Falcon 9 rocket in California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base in 2027. It is worth the wait, as the advancements the JPSS-4 promises are the only weapon humans have currently against global warming, with three versions of the JPSS already in service. This war against global warming has to be won; otherwise, it would spell doom for future generations to come. If the program works as planned, the data collected will help NOAA to continuously observe Earth’s environment to understand and predict changes in weather and climate. The effects of climate change are becoming more visible day by day and may catch us by surprise, but with further advancements in technology, we hope to see these issues being taken care of in the near future.
