The New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern has declared a ban on military-style rifles (high-capacity magazines, assault rifles and military-like semi-automatic rifles). This is part of the tough changes on New Zealand’s gun laws after 50 people were shot dead and many wounded last Friday by a gunman at two mosques in Christchurch (New Zealand). The Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern who announced this during a news conference on Thursday, 21 March said that the ban would be in place by 11 April 2019. She also announced a buy-back scheme for owners of such weapons which will cost between NZ$100 million (S$93 million) and NZ$200 million. She said that anyone that keeps the banned guns after the amnesty period will face three years in prison and a fine of up to NZ$4,000.
