THE IVORY COAST FORMER FIRST LADY, SIMONE GBAGBO WHO WAS ACCUSED OF CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY HAS BEEN GRANTED AMNESTY AND RELEASED FROM DETENTION IN ABIDJAN (IVORY COAST).

Simone Gbagbo, the 69 year old wife of the former President of Ivory Coast (ex-president Laurent Gbagbo) has been granted amnesty and released on Wednesday, 8 August 2018 from detention (Abidjan’s Ecole de Gendarmeriein, Ivory Coast). The former Ivory Coast first lady was accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes for her alleged role in the country’s 2011 civil war. Her husband’s (former President Laurent Gbagbo) refusal to accept defeat to President Alassane Ouattara after the country’s presidential election in November 2010 triggered the war which claimed lives of thousands of people.
She was convicted and sentenced to twenty years in prison in 2015 but was granted amnesty recently by President Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast. Her husband (ex-president Laurent Gbagbo) has been at the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention at Hague for seven years. He has been on trial since 2016 for alleged crimes against humanity.
President Alassane Ouattara announced on Monday, 6 August 2018 (country’s independence day) that Simone Gbagbo (the former first lady of Ivory Coast) including 800 others have been granted amnesty in the name of national reconciliation.
