A man officially identified as Robert Bowers (46 year old white man) armed with an assault rifle and two pistols entered the building of Tree of Life synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighbourhood (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) on Saturday morning and opened fire as worshippers had gathered for a baby naming ceremony during the Sabbath, killing eleven people and wounded several others including four police officers who responded to the shooting. The shooter was later surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. He is receiving treatment for multiple gunshot wounds. It was believed that he made anti-Semitic statements during the shooting and targeted Jews in posts on his Gab.com account. Federal prosecutors have filed hate crime charges against the suspect (Robert Bowers) and he could face death penalty if he is convicted of a hate crime.
May the souls of those who lost their lives during the shooting rest in peace.
