THE EUROPEAN UNION HAS IMPOSED SANCTIONS ON BELARUS OVER FRAUDULENT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

The European Union recently sanctioned the government of President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus over 9 August fraudulent presidential election. European Union followed Canada and United Kingdom to pressure President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus to conduct a fresh presidential election in the country. The European Union condemned August 9 presidential election, said that the election in which President Lukashenko declared himself winner was not free and fair. They also condemned President Lukashenko’s government brutality on peaceful protesters. Travel bans and assets freeze were imposed on 40 Belarusian officials by the European Union. On 23 September 2020, President Lukashenko was sworn in for a sixth term with the backing of President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Germany, Lithuania and most Western governments have refused to recognize his victory. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya (exiled opposition leader) said that she is the legitimate winner of the country’s presidential election held on 9 August 2020.
