The Employees Remuneration Protection Bill sponsored by Hon. Wale Ahmed of the House of Representatives of Nigeria is a nice one, but it cannot work in Nigeria.

Charity, they say, begins at home. Sponsoring a bill and giving it a beautiful name would only be on paper. This Employee Remuneration and Protection Bill and the member of the House of Representatives sponsoring it meant well for Nigerian workers. But it would not be implemented in Nigeria because the leadership of Nigeria does not respect or obey laws, especially if the law does not favour them. So, if it turns out that the Employees Remuneration Protection Bill is passed into law, it is certainly not going to be implemented. We are saying so because both the federal and state governments are among the highest employers of labour in Nigeria. If you examine the records properly, up until today, some state government workers are still being owed their salaries; even pensioners in most states of Nigeria have not received their pension allowances for months, if not years. In this situation, how are you going to drag a government that does not respect nor obey the laws of Nigeria to pay those they are owing? It is not a hidden thing; Nigerians have seen how those who took the government to court in Nigeria and won their cases were treated. Till today, the decision made by the court against the government of Nigeria, asking the government to pay a certain amount of money to those individuals who won their cases, was not paid. The government of Nigeria ignored the court rulings, which is bad. Therefore, the Employee Remuneration and Protection Bill being sponsored by Hon. Wale Ahmed would end up being ignored when the time for implementation comes. This is the truth; take it or leave it.
