TANZANIA TO RETURN OVER 220,000 BURUNDI REFUGEES WHO SOUGHT SHELTER IN THE COUNTRY DURING A POLITICAL CRISIS IN BURUNDI WHICH BEGAN IN 2015.

It was reported that Tanzania has agreed to return over 220,000 Burundian refugees who sought shelter in Tanzania during a political crisis in Burundi that started in 2015. Pascal Barandagiye, Burundian Interior Minister stated that Repatriation will start in October and 2,000 refugees will be Repatriated weekly. The minister also urged the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to allow Burundians to return home. The United Nations said in the past that Tanzania and Burundi should respect refugee rights by not forcing repatriations.
