SUDAN TO HAND OVER FORMER OFFICIALS WANTED FOR ALLEGED WAR CRIMES IN DARFUR REGION TO INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT.

It was reported that the Sudanese government has agreed to surrender former officials wanted for alleged war crimes in the Darfur region to the international criminal court (ICC). This comes after Fatou Bensouda (the outgoing ICC chief prosecutor) visited Sudan and urged the government to surrender those wanted for war crimes, including the ex-President Omar al-Bashir. In the past, the government of Sudan promised to hand over former President Omar al-Bashir to international criminal court but the country has not done so up till now. Ex-President Omar al-Bashir, who was ruling Sudan when the war in Danfur happened, was ousted by the military after mass protests in 2019. He is currently serving a jail term for corruption. The Darfur war, which started in 2003 between rebels and government forces claimed the lives of about 300,000 people. Millions of people were displaced in the war in Darfur region, which has caused one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises in recent years.
