Halimah Yacob, a 63 year old Malay woman has been declared Singapore’s new president. Halimah Yacob who will be the country’s eighth president and first female president was the only candidate qualified for the post. Her experience as Singapore’s speaker of the parliament for three years qualified her under the country’s nomination rules which stated that only candidates from Malay community would contest for the post. The last Malay to hold the post was Yusof Ishak who was Singapore’s president between 1965 and 1970. Congratulations to Halimah Yacob.
