The ex-first lady of Guatemala and former presidential candidate, Sandra Torres was reportedly arrested at her home on Monday on charges of campaign finance violations. According to the report our correspondent gathered, the Torres’ home at Guatemala City was searched, she was handcuffed and transported to court. Prosecutors accused her of unregistered electoral financing, illicit association related to the 2015 election and that of her party (National Unity of Hope party). The political party according to the investigators did not properly register about $3.6 million in financing for her campaign. It was also stated that companies that financed the party did so through the payment of commissions, diversion of funds, bribes to various public and private institutions. The 63 year old Sandra Torres denied the allegations, said that she was the victim of a political vendetta. Also Sandra Torres’ vice presidential running mate in 2015 (Mario Leal Castillo) is wanted in the case. The court has set a hearing on 6 September 2019.
