It was reported that ex-president Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has passed away. According to the report, Robert Mugabe had been receiving medical treatment in Singapore since April. President Emmerson Mnangagwa (Mugabe’s successor) who took over after Robert Mugabe was ousted in a military coup in 2017 after 37 years in power announced his death. Robert Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924 in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). He was sent to jail in 1964 after criticising the government of Rhodesia. while still in prison, in 1973 he was chosen to be the president of the Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu) which he was a founding member. He traveled to Mozambique immediately he was set free and organized guerrilla raids into Rhodesia. Later, the crisis was resolved and political agreements were reached which gave birth to the new independent Republic of Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwean independence icon started well in his early years of leading Zimbabwe, he was praised for broadening access to health and education for the black majority but his later years when he turned authoritarian were marked with violent repression of his political opponents and Zimbabwe’s economic ruin.
