President Joe Biden’s government has appointed Rob Malley as the United States special envoy for Iran. Rob Malley was former president Barack Obama’s Middle East adviser and took part in 2015 Iran nuclear deal negotiations. He also supports United States to return to the agreement. Iran on the other hand is pressuring United States to return to the agreement, the country (Iran) announced last week Thursday that it produced 17 kilograms (37.5 pounds) of uranium enrichment to 20 percent in less than a month at its Fordo nuclear facility. Iran is only allowed to enrich uranium to around 3.5 percent under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal. Some Republicans criticised Rob Malley’s appointment, stating that he is too soft on Iran and unlikely to support Israel. Israel and Gulf Arab states strongly opposed the 2015 nuclear accord when it was negotiated and were happy when former president Donald Trump withdrew United States from the deal in 2018 and imposed more sanctions on Iran.
