President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi is reportedly dead. According to the report, he died after suffering a cardiac arrest. President Pierre Nkurunziza was admitted at Karusi hospital on Saturday, his condition improved but on Monday, 8 June 2020, he died after suffering a heart attack. Mr Pierre Nkurunziza came to power in 2005 after a civil war which killed about 300,000 Burundians. He was supposed to step down in August after leading the country (Burundi) for 15 years. His announcement in 2015 to run for a third term plunged the country into chaos. There were protests, a failed coup attempt which led to lost of many lives and thousands of people fled Burundi. Mr Pierre Nkurunziza decided to retire after a change of constitution and was to be called the supreme guide to patriotism. He was to receive $540,000 (£440,000) retirement pay-out and a luxury villa. The Burundi’s government has announced seven days of national mourning. May his soul rest in peace.
