Ghana’s election commission on Wednesday declared President Nana Akufo-Addo the winner of the country’s presidential election which was held on Monday, 7 December 2020. President Nana Akufo-Addo (the incumbent president) secured 51.6 percent of the vote to defeat his main rival (former president John Mahama) and 10 other candidates. It was reported that five people were killed in Ghana’s election violence since Monday. On Wednesday after the election results were announced, the supporters of the opposition party (the National Democratic Congress) protested outside Ghana’s electoral commission, saying that there were some irregularities and that former president John Mahama was leading in the election. Independent observers of Ghana’s Monday election including European Union’s chief observer (Javier Nart) said that the election was generally free and fair. Former president John Mahama was Ghana’s president for four years until 2016 when the incumbent president (Nana Akufo-Addo) succeeded him. President Nana Akufo-Addo from New Patriotic Party and former President John Mahama are old rivals as the two men have contested against each other for three consecutive times.
