military interventions in Libya

PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN’S GOVERNMENT HAS CALLED ON RUSSIA, TURKEY AND UNITED ARAB EMIRATES TO HALT THEIR MILITARY INTERVENTIONS IN LIBYA.

The United States has called on Russia, Turkey and United Arab Emirates to halt their military interventions in Libya as demanded in October 23 cease-fire agreement. The United States also warned the three countries to accept Libya’s sovereignty as the country is trying to unify its government, hold elections and end years of war. Stephanie Williams, the acting United Nations envoy said that foreign interference, flights carrying military cargo are still going on in Libya despite the cease-fire agreement. Stephanie Williams also called on all foreign fighters and mercenaries who are supposed to leave Libya by January 23 to leave the country. Russia, Turkey and United Arab Emirates were signaled out by Richard Mills, the United States deputy ambassador to the United Nations because they are the three key foreign backers of Libya’s rival governments. Turkey is the main backer of the United Nations-supported government in Tripoli (Libya’s capital) while United Arab Emirates, Russia and Egypt support the forces of military commander, Khalifa Hifter who runs most of the east and the southern part of Libya. Russia’s United Nation Mission stated that Russia does not have any military intervention in Libya, that if there are Russians as mercenaries in Libya, that those who hired them should be addressed to withdraw them. Since 2011 that Moammar Gadhafi was killed in NATO-backed uprising, the country has been fighting civil war.
