President Jacob Zuma has appointed advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane as the South African public protector. Busisiwe Mkhwebane was selected after over sixty candidates including judge Siraj Desai, judge Sharise Weiner, Professor Bongani Majola, and advocate Muvhango Lukhaimane were nominated by the South Africans. She won by 263 votes during a debate in the National Assembly and will replace Thuli Madonsela, the outgoing public protector. Mkhwebane’s appointment will take effect from October 15, 2016 to a period of seven years according to section 193(4) of the country’s Constitution.
