President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has pardoned at least three thousand prisoners in order to decongest the country’s overpopulated prisons. The Zimbabwean Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) announced this recently and according to the report, those pardoned includes all female prisoners except those serving life terms, all disabled and juvenile prisoners, terminally-ill prisoners and those above the age of 60 who have served one third of their jail terms. Also it was announced that the death row inmates who have served more than 10 years will not face the death penalty, but will spend life in jail. President Emmerson Mnangagwa who took over from ex-president Robert Mugabe in November 2017 is a strong opponent of death penalty. This amnesty by the Zimbabweans president excludes those convicted of murder, treason, rape, carjacking, armed robbery and those serving a sentence imposed by a court martial.
