The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has declared President Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner of the just concluded Zimbabwe’s presidential election. President Mnangagwa of Zanu-PF party got 50.8% of votes against the 44.3% for Nelson Chamisa (opposition leader of MDC Alliance). The opposition party (Movement for Democratic Change Alliance) has rejected the election result, saying that the count could not be verified. On Wednesday, 2 August 2018, the opposition supporters protested in Harare over alleged vote-rigging, which resulted to six deaths and 14 people were injured.
This is the first election held since ex president Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe was ousted in November 2017. Zanu-PF also won majority seats (144 seats) in the country’s parliamentary election, MDC Alliance won 64 seats and National Patriotic Front (1 seat).
