Pope Francis has made a historic visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), giving hope for Christianity in the troubled Middle East. His visit in the United Arab Emirates is the first ever by a pontiff to the Arabian peninsula (the birthplace of Islam). Upon his arrival in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, he was greeted by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan). Pope Francis participated in an interfaith conference on Monday, 4 February 2019 where him and Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb (the grand imam al-Azhar mosque, the highest seat of learning for Sunni Muslims) were main speakers at the Founder’s Memorial. He will hold Mass on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi and about 120,000 people are expected to attend.
Pope Francis has visited Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt and now the UAE with the message of harmony, to promote peace and understanding between two of the world’s great religions. Next month (March), he will visit Morocco.
