Pope Francis has appointed 17 new cardinals in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, October 9, 2016.
13 newly appointed cardinals who are below the age of 80 years are eligible to succeed Pope Francis in future. The newly appointed cardinals come from different countries including Papua, Mauritius, the Central African Republic, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Italy, Belgium, New Guinea and three from American (Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago, Archbishop Joseph Tobin of Indianapolis and former Dallas bishop Kevin Farrell). Cardinals (princes of the Church) are next in command under the pope in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church and they also serve as Pope’s principal advisers around the world.
