Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered that Filipino workers be evacuated from Iraq and Iran as the tensions between the United States and Iran have increased following the killing of a top Iranian commander (Qassem Soleimani) by the United States drone strike last week Friday in Baghdad. President Rodrigo Duterte also said that his government is sending a coast guard vessel to the Middle East to carry Philippine’s citizens to safety in case the tensions between the United States and Iran worsen. Our correspondent in Manila reported that the Philippine government has raised the alert level in Iraq to the highest level, requiring Filipinos to leave the country due to escalating security situation in the region. Filipino workers are also asked to leave Iran and Lebanon. About 2.3 million Filipinos are working in the Middle East as domestic helpers, construction workers, engineers and nurses. Indian government also advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iraq. Other Asian countries may take similar decision after Iran fired 22 missiles at two Iraqi military bases housing U.S-coalition forces.
