Peugeot has purchased the Indian most famous car brand ( Ambassador) from its maker (Hindustan Motors) at the cost of 800 million rupees ($12 million). The Indian Ambassador brand was first manufactured in 1948 and it was the only luxury car available in India till the mid-1980s when India opened her doors to other car manufacturers. The Ambassador brand which was modeled after the British Morris Oxford III was used to carrying India’s elite (prime ministers, visiting heads of states and celebrities). By early 1990’s, Indian government had switched to smaller Japanese and Korean cars and Ambassador brand was turned to the services of taxi and government departments. Hindustan Motors stopped making Ambassadors in 2014 after selling about 2,200 cars in 2013.
