Paul Petersen, a former Arizona politician has been sentenced in Arkansas to 6 years in federal prison for running an illegal adoption scheme. Paul Petersen served as metro Phoenix’s assessor for six years and also worked as an adoption attorney. Prosecutors accused him of paying women from the Pacific island nation illegally to come to the United States to give up their babies in at least 70 adoptions cases in Arizona, Utah and Arkansas. Paul Petersen admitted of committing the crime (arranging adoptions prohibited by an international compact). Judge Timothy Brooks who sentenced Paul Petersen said that he abused his position as an attorney by misleading or instructing others to lie to courts in adoptions that would not have been approved had they know the truth. Paul Petersen also faces sentencing next month for convictions in Utah and Arizona.
