OVER FIFTY PEOPLE WERE RECENTLY KILLED AND HUNDREDS OF FARMS DESTROYED IN SOMALILAND DUE TO HEAVY RAINS AND FLOODS.

It was reported that over fifty people have lost their lives, hundreds of farms and livestock destroyed in Somaliland due to heavy rains and floods. According to Abdirahman Abdullahi Ismail (the vice president) who reported the tragedy in Hargeisa (Somaliland’s capital), the heavy rains and floods were caused by a tropical cyclone. In 1991, Somaliland broke away from Somalia and operates as an independent state but it has not been recognized internationally. Since March when raining season started in Somalia, flash floods and riverine have caused fatalities and destruction of homes and farmlands. According to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), about 772,500 people have been affected by flooding and over 229,000 are displaced.
