The Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said al-Said (one of the Middle East’s longest serving rulers who maintained Oman’s neutrality in regional disputes) is dead. Qaboos bin Said al-Said (79 years) died on Friday, 10 January 2020. Qaboos had been sick for years and went for medical treatment in Belgium last month. Oman and other Gulf states declared three days of official mourning with flags to be flown at half-mast for Qaboos. Oman’s Qaboos bin Said al-Said ruled Oman after taking over with the help of former colonial power Britain in a bloodless coup in 1970. The new ruler of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq al-Said took the oath of allegiance as Sultan on Saturday to succeed his cousin Qaboos bin Said. He (Haitham bin Tariq al-Said) promised to maintain the Gulf Arab state’s foreign policy which according to him was built on peaceful coexistence and maintaining friendly ties with all nations.
