It was reported that about twelve people were killed and hundreds wounded on Thursday, January 2, 2018 when a train (Shosholoza Meyl train) crashed near Hennenman in the Free State province, South Africa. According to the report, the train which was travelling from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg hit a lorry, derailed and burst into flames. Joe Maswanganyi, the country’s transport Minister said that the train carried 700 passengers and among the 268 people injured, four are critical. South Africa has the largest railway network in the continent (Africa), but it has experienced a lot of crashes due to mismanagement and under-investment. According to the country’s Rail Safety Regulator report for the 2016/17 financial year, 495 people were killed while 2,079 were wounded in the country’s railway environment.
