Nikola Gruevski, the 47-year-old former Macedonian Prime Minister was on Wednesday, May 8, 2018, sentenced to two years in prison for corruption related offences. According to the report our correspondent gathered, Nikola Gruevski unlawfully influenced officials at the interior ministry to purchase his luxury bulletproof Mercedes car worth about 600,000 euros ($700,000) in 2012. Nikola Gruevski served as the country’s Prime Minister from 27 August 2006 to 18 January 2016 and he led the VMRO-DPMNE party from May 2003 to December 2017. Gruevski faces four other criminal charges of corruption, election irregularities, ordering violence and abuse of office which are still pending. Also Gjoko Popovski, a former senior interior ministry official was on Tuesday convicted of abuse of office and sentenced to nine years over a procurement deal for police patrol cars. In 2008, he (Gjoko Popovski) purchased 300 vehicles, overcharging state treasury by more than 450,000 euros ($530,000).
