NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS

NEW TAX LAW ON NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS WILL KILL JOBS IN NIGERIA AND BRING MORE HARDSHIP TO THE COUNTRY.

Those advising President Buhari’s government on issues of the economy are misleading him. Tax is a good source of income to any government, but too much of it without adequately providing basic needs for its people can create hardship. In Nigeria, the majority can barely feed well because almost everything in the market has increased, and it is still increasing daily. Those working can barely have money to buy certain food items for themselves and their families. If tax is placed on those non-alcoholic drinks, which is helping most Nigerians cool their system, then the prices of these non-alcoholic drinks will increase, making it difficult for people to buy them. When people are not purchasing these drinks anymore as they used to, it would then affect the producing companies. When such happens, cutting down the number of staff of those companies producing these soft drinks would set in, which would bring the unemployment rate to a very high level. This is a simple calculation which everyone should know. If the government wants to place taxes on products, they should have a way to balance it so that it would not negatively affect the Nigerian people. In Nigeria, the government will wake up and place taxes on products without proper evaluation, especially how such policy would affect the country’s people. The Viewers Corner News team pleads with the government of Nigeria to have a re-think, possibly look for other areas where to raise money without creating more hardship for Nigerians than what they are passing through at the moment.
