Nayib Bukele, the former mayor of San Salvador and anti corruption candidate of Grand Alliance for National Unity has won El Salvador’s presidential election on Sunday, 3 February 2019. He (Nayib Bukele) won a landslide victory with about 54% of the votes while his closest rival (Carlos Callejas of the Nationalist Republican Alliance) got less than 32% of the total votes. The former foreign minister Hugo Martinez of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) was in third position with about 14% of the votes. Mr Calleja and Hugo Martinez said they would congratulate the president-elect (Nayib Bukele).
Nayib Bukele who campaigned on the slogan “There is enough money when no one steals”, vowed to fight corruption and the criminal gangs responsible for one of the world’s highest murder rates.
El Salvador is a small country with population of about
6.5 million people and about 67,000 Salvadorans belong to gangs that commit different crimes including extortion and murder.
