Nabih Berri has been re-elected by the Lebanese parliament as the speaker of the house on Wednesday. Nabih Berri, the 80 year old Shi’ite politician and close ally of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group was re-elected for the sixth term as the Lebanese parliamentary speaker in an uncontested vote. He (Nabih Berri) won 98 of 128 votes of the country’s members of the parliament and has held the post since 1992. Berri who is the head of the Amal Movement has been allied with Hezbollah since the end of country’s civil war (1975-1990). Also Elie Ferzli, another Hezbollah ally was elected as the deputy speaker of the parliament. Hezbollah and supporters won about 70 of 128 seats in Lebanese parliament in May 6 when the election was held. This is a reversal of the country’s (Lebanon) last general election in 2009, when anti-Hezbollah groups won a majority.
