MYANMAR MILITARY JUNTA TAKES OVER THE COUNTRY, DETAINED THE COUNTRY’S SENIOR POLITICIANS INCLUDING AUNG SAN SUU KYI.

The military junta in Myanmar has seized the country in a coup and arrested the country’s senior politicians including Aung San Suu Kyi. In a televised statement after the coup, the military said that they will take control of the country for one year and a year of state of emergency has been imposed in the country. The military also said that Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing would be in charge of the country, while Myint Swe would be the acting president. Myint Swe who the military junta installed as Myanmar’s president after the coup was known for his role in the crackdown on 2007 pro-democracy protests. Viewers Corner News correspondent in Bangkok gathered that after the military named Myint Swe the president, he handed power to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing (Myanmar’s top military commander). The coup came days after escalation of tensions between the military and the civilians. The military cited election fraud after the November 8 election in which Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won in a landslide. The United States, United Nations, Australia and other countries have condemned the military takeover. In 2015, Aung San Suu Kyi indirectly led the country after 50 years of military rule in Myanmar.
