It was reported that Morocco and Israel have agreed to normalise relations in a deal brokered by the United States. President Donald Trump announced the agreement on Twitter on Thursday. Morocco has become the latest and sixth Arab League country to agree to normalise relations with Israel. United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, Egypt and Jordan have normalised relations with Israel. Under the deal, the liaison offices in Tel Aviv and Rabat which were closed in 2000 when the two countries relations broke down after the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising will be opened, then followed by reopening of embassies. Also Morocco would grant direct flights to and from Israel for all Israelis. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister hailed the agreement and thanked Morocco’s king. Egypt, United Aab Emirates and Bahrain had issued statements, welcoming the agreement between Morocco and Israel. Palestinian condemned the diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel, stating that it encouraged Israel to deny their rights. As part of the deal, the United States agreed to recognise Morocco’s claim over the disputed Western Sahara region. The Western Sahara region, former Spanish colony was annexed by Morocco in 1975 and has been the subject of territorial dispute between Morocco and its indigenous Saharawi people, led by Algeria-backed pro-independence Polisario Front. Morocco said that Western Sahara is part of its territory, but the African Union recognises it as an independent state.
