It was reported that German prosecutors have charged the former Volkswagen CEO, Martin Winterkorn (71 years old) and four others with fraud over diesel emission. Our correspondent learned that Volkswagen fitted its vehicles with illegal software to cheat emission tests and Martin Winterkorn was Volkswagen CEO when the scandal surfaced in 2015. The prosecutors accused Winterkorn of being aware of this cheating but failed to inform the company’s customers/authorities in Europe and United States instead they continued selling vehicles fitted with illegal software. Martin Winterkorn denied wrongdoing. If convicted, the charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Last year he (Winterkorn) was charged by the United States authorities for conspiracy to defraud consumers.
